Post-election legislative sessions start more slowly when a new governor is elected. But so far, there's not even a schedule.

Gov. Chris Christie fired back Wednesday after Assembly Speaker Vincent Prieto criticized him for redirecting unspent funds that had been budgeted for Tuition Aid Grants and preschool expansion to instead pay for opioid programs.

While Speaker Prieto said the governor could order state employees to be paid, Christie said it was not within his authority.

New Jersey's state Senate president and Assembly speaker have reached a deal to pass a state budget, and to reopen New Jersey government.

The state government shutdown continues for a third day on Monday with more efforts underway to bring it to an end.

Senate President Steve Sweeney said he's been trying to meet with Horizon Blue Cross Blue Shield for over a week with no response.

“It could be infinity. It could go right until I leave office,” Gov. Chris Christie said. “... The cap is when the budget reaches my desk."

If the Assembly does not approve a budget by midnight on Friday it could mean the closure of state parks and beaches as early as Saturday.
