A man from Sicklerville is facing charges after authorities say he stabbed a UPS driver in Williamstown Wednesday afternoon.

The incident happened just before 12:30 at the Madison Court Apartments on the Black Horse Pike.

Officers with the Monroe Township Police Department arrived at the scene and approached a slowly moving UPS truck which eventually hit a curb and stopped.

Inside the truck, authorities say 50-year-old Ernest Peterson of Sicklerville was on top of the UPS driver and attempting to stab him with a knife.

Officers removed Paterson from the truck and after a brief struggle, he was taken into custody.

The UPS driver was taken to Jefferson Hospital in Washington Township where he was treated for minor lacerations above his right eye and back.

The victim told police Peterson entered the truck and wanted a ride to the front of the apartment complex. The driver refused, citing company policy. Upon his refusal, Peterson brandished a knife and began attacking him before being stopped by police.

Peterson has been charged with aggravated assault, possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, unlawful possession of a weapon, and resisting arrest.

Any witnesses to the alleged attack are asked to contact Det. Josh Sheppard with the Monroe Township Police Department at (856) 728-9800.

The public is reminded that charges are accusations and all persons are considered innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
