If it were up to PETA, traditional phrases like "bring home the bacon," that are out-of-step with a vegan lifestyle, would be replaced with "harm-free alternatives."

PETA says on its website: ‘While these phrases may seem harmless, they carry meaning and can send mixed signals about the relationship between humans and animals and can normalize abuse.’

A researcher says popular phrases we use could be axed as vegan lifestyles grow in popularity.A Swansea University researcher says increased awareness and being conscious of vegan issues will undoubtedly be reflected in our language and literature moving forward.

Animal rights group PETA has already been pushing for harm-free alternatives for some time and has a list of suggestions that people could use so they don’t offend vegans:

Out:  Bring Home the bacon

In:  Bring home the bagels

Out: All your eggs in one basket

In: All your berries in one bowl

Out: Flog a dead horse

In; Feed a fed horse

Out:  Hold your horses

In: Hold the phone

Out: Killing tow birds with one stone

In: Feeding two birds with one scone

Out:  More than one way to skin a cat

In:  More than one way to peel a potato
