Vineland Man Charged in Cape May County Beach Incidents
A Vineland man has been charged in connection with several lewd acts this past summer at a notorious beach in Cape May County.
Multiple Victims Report Lewd Acts at Higbee Beach
The Lower Township Police Department says they were first notified of an incident in August when a woman "reported an interaction with a male on Higbee Beach that made her feel uncomfortable." According to officials, the man left the area, only to return nude, and he committed a lewd act.
Police learned of another incident a few days later when two victims reported a similar incident involving a man who, again, allegedly committed a lewd act at Higbee Beach.
The descriptions of the suspect in both incidents were similar, with all the victims seemingly describing the same person, per authorities.
Suspect Arrested
Following an investigation, 44-year-old Leonardo L. Medero of Vineland was taken into custody and charged with multiple counts of lewdness.
Medero was last reported to be held in the Cape May County Correctional Center pending initial court proceedings.
A Colorful History
Higbee Beach has had a colorful history, as it was considered a nude beach until Lower Township made clothing mandatory quite a number of years ago. It took quite some time, and a court case or two, for that rule to stick.
The public is reminded that charges are accusations and all persons are considered innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
