Wanted man hit 3 Mt. Laurel, NJ, cops with vehicle during traffic stop, department says
A man from Camden is facing a long list of charges after allegedly hitting three police officers with a vehicle during a traffic stop last week.
The scene unfolded late on the morning of Thursday, March 14th, at the Walmart on Route 73 in Mt. Laurel, Burlington County.
Joel Carrero of Camden, NJ, Arrested
Officials say officers with the Mount Laurel Police Department stopped a vehicle being driven by 44-year-old Joel Carrero in the store's parking lot.
Carrero allegedly initially provided police with false information so he wouldn't be arrested on an outstanding warrant from the Burlington County Sheriff's Department.
Once advised of the active arrest warrant, Mr. Carrero reversed the vehicle first striking three officers and one passenger with the doors of his vehicle and then striking a police vehicle and finally another vehicle.
The three officers and the passenger all sustained minor injuries and they did not need to be hospitalized.
Carrero fled the scene but was arrested the next day by the Cherry Hill Police Department.
Carrero is facing the following charges:
- Second-degree aggravated assault
- Second-degree eluding
- 3 separate counts of third-degree aggravated assault on police
- Third-degree endangering an injured victim
- 3 separate counts of third-degree resisting arrest
- Fourth-degree hindering own apprehension
- Fourth-degree obstruction
- Assault by auto (disorderly persons offense)
As of a press release from the morning of March 22nd, Carrero was still being held in the Camden County Jail.
The public is reminded that charges are accusations and all persons are considered innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
