Watch: Atlantic City, 99 Years Ago
The year was 1919... the 18th Amendment to the Constitution took effect, removing alcohol from the hands of Americans. The Grand Canyon officially became a National Park. Ripley's Believe It or Not! starts to become a household name. President Theodore Roosevelt died and President Woodrow Wilson suffered a stroke that left him partially paralyzed. In the world of sports, Babe Ruth was sold by the Red Sox to the Yankees for $125,000.
Locally in Atlantic City, huge trains brought people right to the shore and people up and down the boardwalk were all dressed up (especially by today's standards) just to enjoy a stroll. Lucy The Elephant, seen in the video below, is already 38 years old. And if you wanted to turn on the radio to find out what was happening in town, well, you would have to wait another six years (Atlantic City's first station started broadcasting in 1925).
The year was 1919 and this is what Atlantic City looked like...
