That sample was collected on May 27th and confirmed positive for the virus on June 2nd. The first positive sample was found in the 1200 block of Zion Road in Northfield and confirmed last week.

Health officials encourage residents to reduce their risk and the spread of West Nile virus by reducing their exposure to mosquito bites by following these tips:

  • Use an insect repellent whenever going outdoors. Repellents are an important tool to assist people in protecting themselves from mosquito-borne diseases.
  • Rid properties of mosquito breeding grounds by draining standing water. Buckets, bird baths, flower pots, and other containers can hold water and provide an ideal environment for mosquitoes.
  • Clean clogged gutters
  • Check and repair screen doors
