Will You Eat This Pennsylvania Pizza With Cold Ingredients on Top?
I never heard of this until very recently.
It’s called “Pittsburgh Pizza.” The under carriage and crust is cooked and it is topped with cold ingredients … toppings such as cheese, pepperoni, etc.
It looks strange to me, but, I’m used to a more traditional pizza, where all of the ingredients are cooked.
I love pizza … but, I don’t know that I would love this uncooked pizza.
I first learned about “Pittsburgh Pizza” on the “NFL Shots Fired“ Facebook page.
About the “Pittsburgh Pizza,” they wrote:
People in Pittsburgh actually eat pizza where the crust is cooked and toppings are put on cold. So to answer your question, yes, Pittsburgh is as bad as it sounds.
Ouch, that’s too harsh. Every area has food items that other parts of the country would view as strange or unappealing.
Think about Scrapple for example. Many love it and many can’t believe the ones who actually eat it.
Let’s take a look at the so-called “Pittsburgh Pizza.”
Would you eat it?
For me … it’s just not appealing for the toppings to be placed cold on the pizza and serve it that way.
The Facebook post generated hundreds of comments. We have included several here for your enjoyment:
Adam Johnson wrote, “WTF, they really out here selling Lunchables pizzas.”
I have to admit, the photo above looks like a magnum-sized “Lunchables.”
John Hertzler Says that “Pittsburgh gets a bad rap. It's actually a very beautiful city and some great restaurants.”
I strongly agree with John.
Bill Kammermeier echoes a similar theme, saying that “I'm from Pittsburgh and I do eat that pizza and it is absolutely delicious and if you haven't had it you are missing out.”
Michelle Johnson provided very important information on this topic. She wrote that, “This is DiCarlos pizza. It's delicious actually. Been around since like the 50s/ 60s. My great grandma lived in Steubenville, Ohio and we got pizza from DiCarlos uptown.”
Jill Kamerer Smith wrote, “BEST.PIZZA.EVER if you grew up eating it. Others will never understand!! And I'm most hurt by the Lunchable comment!”
Patrick Hanna Wrote, “The first time I went to Beto's in Pittsburgh I thought it would be disgusting. It turned out to be phenomenal pizza. It's weird to knock things you haven't even tried.”
That’s a very fair comment by Patrick.
Jay Brown shed additional light, writing: “Originated in Steubenville, Ohio just after WWIl. Popular all up and down the Ohio River valley. There are/were a few shops in & around Western PA, and a few other cities in Ohio.”
After reading dozens of comments about this pizza … I think I would give it a try.
