An 8-year-old boy who was sleeping in a car after fishing with his father was killed in a crash on Route 30 early Sunday morning.

The accident happened around 3:25 AM on the westbound side of the White Horse Pike in Absecon.

According to the Atlantic County Prosecutor's Office, 25-year-old Edward Johnston of Egg Harbor City was traveling westbound on Route 30 in a 2019 Nissan Sentra when it went off the roadway and struck a Honda that was parked on the shoulder.

An 8-year-old boy who had been fishing with his father was asleep in the vehicle when it was struck. He was taken to a local hospital where he later died from his injuries.

Johnston was issued several motor vehicle summonses and additional charges may be forthcoming pending a final investigation into the cause of the crash.

The Atlantic County Prosecutor’s Office and the Absecon Police Department are cooperatively investigating this incident.
