One person was killed and five others were hurt in a head-on crash in Hamilton Township, Atlantic County, Wednesday afternoon that closed a major highway for several hours.

The accident happened at about 2:15 on the Black Horse Pike just west of High Bank Road.

A preliminary investigation from the Hamilton Township Police Department determined a Chevrolet Equinox, driven by 30-year-old Stephen Sirch of Voorhees, and a Honda Civic, driven by 29-year-old Karina Castillo of Pine Hill, were traveling west on the Black Horse Pike when the two vehicles made contact.

Authorities say after that contact, Castillo's vehicle crossed over the center-painted median into the eastbound lanes and was struck by an on-coming Ford Fusion, being driven by 40-year-old Diana Hernandez-Ramos of Hammonton.

1 Killed, 5 Injured

Castillo was pronounced dead at the scene.

Sirch sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was taken to AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center-City Division.

Hernandez-Ramos and two adult passengers also sustained non-life-threatening injuries and were also taken to ARMC-City.

A juvenile passenger sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to Cooper University Medical Center in Camden.

Traffic on the Black Horse Pike was diverted for several hours.

Assisting on-scene were the Township of Hamilton Rescue Squad; the Dorothy Rescue Squad; AtlantiCare Emergency Medical Services; fire departments from Mays Landing, Weymouth, and Laureldale; the Atlantic County Prosecutor’s Office; and the New Jersey Department of Transportation.

Investigation Continues
