ENGLEWOOD — Police in Bergen County are looking for a man who sexually assaulted an elderly woman before an early morning service.

The shocking parking lot assault was captured on surveillance footage. Police released a portion of the graphic video a week after the incident.

Police told reporters that the 83-year-old woman was taken down to the ground outside the Korean Community Church about 5:30 a.m. July 28.

Police say the man followed the woman through the parking lot of St. Cecilia's Church toward the Korean church on Tenafly Road.

The man stopped the sexual assault and "calmly" walked away when the victim waved to a passing car.

The attacker was described as a Hispanic male in his 30s, about 5 feet 6 inches tall, wearing a drawstring backpack, light-colored pants and dark shoes with light-colored soles.

The woman suffered minor injuries, police say.

The attack happened days before a 71-year-old woman in the town of Boonton woke up to find an 18-year-old man trying to rape her in bed, police said. The suspect in that case was arrested and charged Tuesday.

Investigators believe the Englewood rapist may be a local resident. Authorities said they beefed up plainclothes patrols of the area.

Bergenfield-Englewood-Teaneck-Hackensack Crime Stoppers is offering up to $1,000 in cash for information that helps identify and catch the suspect. Anyone with information is asked to call police at 201-568-4875 or visit the Crime Stoppers website.
