Atlantic City, NJ, Housing Update with Van Drew, Young, Others
United States Congressman Jeff Van Drew attended and briefly spoke at a public housing rally held in Atlantic City, New Jersey.
The public housing rally took place on Tuesday, September 3, 2024 outside of the All Wars Memorial Building, Soldiers Home, 1510 Adriatic Avenue in Atlantic City, New Jersey.
Van Drew reminded those in attendance that colder weather is coming and the many problems (no heat, no hot water) still exist for public housing residents in Atlantic City.
Van Drew was warmly received in a largely Democratic area … because those of good faith know that this is not about partisan politics … it’s about taking care of people, who are being regularly underserved by the local city administration and the Atlantic City Housing Authority.
Former Atlantic City Housing Authority Executive Director, Matt Doherty also attended yesterday’s rally.
Doherty has continued to fight for Atlantic City public housing residents.
Atlantic City community activist Steve Young organized the rally.
Young said:
Together we're building a movement to make our vision a reality. Most of us can't afford to live comfortably. We pay too much for rent or we're facing the threat of eviction, cold in the winter or foreclosure.
We are tired of our children and our elders being removed from schools and cut off from the communities that give us security, strength, and love.
Despite all of the challenges - from rent hikes to illegally being forced move— we've seen firsthand how listening to one another, fighting for each other, and building power together, breaks us free from the unfair pain and suffering caused by unjust housing practices and poor maintenance.
Our vision is rooted in the belief that housing is a human right, not a commodity to maximize profit. We believe it is possible to create a just housing system in which everyone has affordable, dignified and permanent homes, said Young.
