Authorities continue to investigate the death of a man while he was in custody at the Cumberland County Jail.

Cumberland County Prosecutor Jennifer Webb-McRae days the incident happened around 5:30 Tuesday evening.

From a press release, "County Correctional Police Officers from the Cumberland County Department of Corrections discovered a 54 year old male who was unresponsive in his cell after what appeared to be a suicide attempt."

Webb-McRae says officers and medical staff responded to the cell and attempted life-saving measures but they were unsuccessful.

A cause of death is pending autopsy results.

The identity of the man is being withheld at the request of his family.
