Best Restaurant – Very Bad Year In Atlantic City, NJ In 1964
1964 was a very bad year in Atlantic City, New Jersey.
It could have been a triumphant year; instead it was disastrous.
Atlantic City was the host for the 1964 Democratic National Convention.
It should have been President John F. Kennedy‘s convention, however, he was assassinated on November 22, 1963.
Atlantic City failed in every way imaginable, even making the mistake of putting the national media in substandard hotel rooms… Without proper hard goods and soft goods… Even giving them paper towels, rather than terry cloth towels, to bathe with.
The national media responded in kind by trashing Atlantic City and ruining its reputation as a national caliber destination resort.
Atlantic City would not recover from this colossal failure until the advent of legalized casino gaming in 1978.
However, there were grand hotels and great restaurants in Atlantic City in 1964.
One of the absolute best was Captain Starn’s.
Captain Starn's was open for more than 40 years in the Inlet section of Atlantic City, New Jersey during the 1940's, 1950's and 1960's.
There were so many wonderful components at Captain Starn's ... here are just some of them:
- Expansive restaurant.
- A fleet of fishing and speed boats.
- A sailboat.
- A trolley that led from Longport directly to
- Captain Starn's.
- And, my absolute favorite was feeding the sea lions. This is a childhood activity that I have never forgotten about.
You could go on an all day, deep sea fishing trip (8 hours) for just $ 4.00.
Captain Starn's drew big crowds every day for more than four decades .. with wonderful activities that were available on both land and sea.
