The Cape May County Bridge Commission wants you to know that cashless tolls go into effect this Saturday, May 10th, on Cape May County's five bridges.

The Bridge Commission insists that this transition will be an easy one, with most drivers not being inconvenienced.

In fact, they say, former cash-paying drivers might find the new cashless toll an easier way to travel.

No Change for E-Z Pass Drivers

Less than a decade after making the E-Z Pass system a payment option, the bridge commission says most people now use E-Z Pass to pay to cross Cape May County's five bridges.

If you are one of the estimated 80% of drivers using EZPass to cross the Cape May bridges, you won't notice any change. You will continue to be charged via E-ZPass.

The $2.50 toll will automatically be deducted from your account.

If You Don't Have E-ZPass

Believe it or not, some New Jersey drivers do not use E-ZPass, even though toll roads surround us in South Jersey.

These are the people who have been paying cash on the Cape May bridges and the ones who will be most impacted by this cashless switch.

Drivers without E-ZPass will use the toll-by-plate system.  A photo will be taken of your license plate as you drive through the toll lane, and they will use that plate number to get your owner information and send you a bill in the mail.

Here's why I would suggest getting E-ZPass to avoid this option.

If you don't pay a toll by plate bill on time, you will be charged a late fee and potentially a violation fee if the unpaid tolls remain outstanding.

A $5 late fee will be added to your second bill, and a $50 violation may be charged for each unpaid toll if that second bill remains unpaid.

I have heard of people who have had bad luck with this toll-by-plate system. It's just a suggestion after what I have heard, you may be fine...

What About My Bridge Tickets?

Until 2018, the Bridge Commission sold discounted tickets for the Ocean Drive tolls.

The tickets were sold for $1.20 a ticket with no expiration date. That was a pretty good deal, with the toll costing $2.50 a trip these days.

Those tickets will no longer be accepted beginning Saturday.

You can send them back for a refund on remaining tickets for 60 days after the tolls go cashless. Call 609.465.7806 for details.
