Route 559 / Cotton Mill Bridge in Mays Landing Reopens Friday

There's good news to report if you frequently travel through downtown Mays Landing: the Cotton Mill Bridge near Lake Lenape will be reopening on Friday.

Officials with Atlantic County say work on a $6.5 million replacement of the bridge that takes traffic on County Route 559/Mill Street across the lake by the old Wheaton Glass factory has been completed. It's scheduled to reopen at 5PM.

According to the county, the original bridge was built in 1940. It closed on March 23, 2020. The county contributed $2.8 million in funding for the project and the rest was paid for by the state.

And just as one major roadway reopens in Mays Landing, another still remains closed for the foreseeable future.

On the other side of town, the New York Avenue bridge over Gravelly Run remains off-limits until further notice. This connection between Reega Avenue in Egg Harbor Township and Route 40 was shut-down in February when, "an engineering underwater dive team revealed extensive damage to the superstructure of the bridge." Reconstruction of that span will take several months to plan and work on a new bridge will likely not begin until this fall. Until then, motorists will need to continue to observe the posted detour.
