BAYVILLE — A crash that shuttered a busy road in Berkeley Township Friday was the result of the driver being under the influence, according to the Berkeley Township Police Department.

Micheal Longo, 37, of Cream Ridge was traveling southbound on Route 9 when his car veered into the northbound lane and struck a utility pole in front of Mike's Foreign Car Repair. Longo's vehicle rammed into parked cars in the lot and continued across the busy road and struck another utility pole in the parking lot of CG Landscape Supply.

>The vehicle sustained substantial damage during the crash. Longo was pinned under the steering wheel. The passenger, Tabitha Gudehus, 38, of Toms River, was also pinned in the backseat of the car.

The Bayville Volunteer Fire Company had to extract them from the car due to the severe damage.

>After a further investigation into the crash, officers concluded that Longo was operating the vehicle under the influence. An undisclosed amount of heroin was also found in the vehicle.

As a result of the investigation, Longo is charged with Driving While Intoxicated, Reckless Driving, Careless Driving, CDS in a Motor Vehicle, and Failure to Maintain Lane. Criminal charges are pending.
