Driver Dies in Overturned Truck on Turnpike; Traffic Backed Up 10 Miles
MILLTOWN — A 60-year-old truck driver from Salem County died Tuesday morning after his tractor trailer overturned on the New Jersey Turnpike.
The cleanup and investigation will have a major impact on the Tuesday morning commute.
As of 10:20 a.m., traffic remained back up for about 8 to 10 miles.
The tractor trailer overturned around 3:50 a.m. in the southbound inner lanes south of Exit 8 for Route 18, leaving one person dead, according to State Police. Only one lane was getting by in on each side as of 10:20 a.m. The truck overturned onto both sides of the southbound lanes.
A picture posted by News 12 New Jersey shows a tanker truck and a Jeep were involved in the crash.
State Police spokesman Alejandro Goez identified the deceased as Anthony Jackson, 60, of the Pedricktown section of Oldmans. He was the only person in the truck, according to Goez.
New Jersey Fast Traffic's Bob Williams suggested exiting the Turnpike at Exit 9 and taking Route 18 north to Route 1 south and Route 130 south. You'll be able to get back on the Turnpike at Exit 8A.
