Driver Who Was Hit By Flying Dumbbell on NJ Turnpike Dies

TRENTON — The Mercer County man who was struck by a dumbbell as he drove on the New Jersey Turnpike on Jan. 9 has died.

State Police spokesman Lawrence Peele confirmed that Jack Decarlo, of Hamilton, died Wednesday night at Crozer Chester Hospital in Pennsylvania.

It is still not clear where the 50-pound dumbbell came from.

The weight crashed through the windshield of Decarlo's GMC Terrain as he drove south at milepost 6.6 at the very southern end of the Turnpike.  He suffered serious facial injuries after being hit in the head. Police said the SUV went off the road and into a ditch.

The man's son, Jim Decarlo, told CBS Philly that his parents were headed to South Carolina for vacation and called the incident “a freak thing."

Peele said the investigation into the incident is ongoing and no arrests have been made. Police searched nearby overpasses to determine if the weight had been thrown onto the highway.
