Every fall, Philadelphia's Eastern State Penitentiary hosts one of the Northeast's most iconic haunted attractions with their Terror Behind the Walls.

This year, though, in the wake of the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic, many of the Halloween season's best events are having to be re-imagined, and that's exactly what Eastern State is doing.

A number of years ago I had the chance to join in on a small paranormal investigation of Eastern State and it was everything that I had hoped it would be.

Not only did the group get to investigate the penitentiary at night after it had closed to the public for the day, but we also got into areas that are normally off limits to the general public.

I could go on about that ghost hunt, but I'm digressing from the main topic today (you can of course click here to read more about that experience, however).

Only about a month after reopening after a months-long closure in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, Eastern State Penitentiary is debuting self-guided night tours of the sprawling, nearly two century old prison for this year's Halloween season.

The night tours will run on select evenings now through the middle of November.

Eastern State Penitentiary made the announcement a few days ago on their official social media channels:

If you like all things creepy, especially this time of year, I really can't recommend a visit to Eastern State enough.

Not only does the imposing, castle-like fortress in the middle of modern day Philadelphia look the part for this time of year, but the history is truly amazing, too.

Get scared and learn something all at the same time!
