Police Abandoned Chase as E-bike Riders Went Wild on New Road
The Northfield Police posted on Facebook on Wednesday about a dangerous incident involving a group of people recklessly riding e-bikes and dirt bikes down the middle of busy New Road in Northfield.
According to the post, one night in June, six or more people riding dirt bikes and electric bikes put themselves and the public at risk by doing stunts and riding dangerously on the street and sidewalk.
The bikers ignored the police officer who was attempting to perform a traffic stop on them, and he turned off his lights and discontinued his pursuit because of how dangerous it had become.
This news comes in the wake of the death of a teen riding an e-bike on the Somers Point bike path in early July and several other close calls this summer that have spotlighted the need for better control over bike riders, especially on e-bikes.
Even if these riders don't care about their safety, they have no right to endanger drivers or walkers they happen to encounter.
Here's What Happened in Northfield
Northfield Police say that Patrolman Christian Gansert saw a group of about six people riding dirt bikes and e-bikes dangerously through town at about 9:12 pm on Thursday, June 12th.
The group was traveling northbound in the middle of New Road, performing wheelies and other stunts, creating a serious hazard for the motoring public.
Patrolman Gansert attempted to initiate a motor vehicle stop, but the individuals refused to comply. Instead, they continued to operate their bikes recklessly—performing wheelies, swerving in the roadway, and riding on the sidewalk.Due to the dangerous conditions created by the riders, Patrolman Gansert deactivated his emergency lights and discontinued the attempted stop to avoid further risk to the public.
One Suspect Has Been Charged
After an investigation, Northfield Police arrested and charged Joseph Griffin, 20, of Linwood, with eluding a police officer, careless driving and reckless driving.
Police say their investigation is continuing concerning the other riders involved that night..
