South Jersey Drivers Warned of Dangerous Black Ice Following Snow Squall
Authorities across South Jersey are alerting drivers to the dangers of blace ice this New Year's Day.
The Hamilton Township Police Department (Atlantic County) sent this notice out to its residents late Thursday morning:
Drivers, please use extreme caution! Temperatures have dropped, and black ice is forming on roads across the area. Black ice is nearly invisible and can cause vehicles to lose traction suddenly.
Early Morning Snow Squall
Just after 6 AM, a strong snow squall swept across the area, bringing a quick blanket of snow, strong gusty winds over 40 MPH, and a sharp drop in temperatures from above freezing to below.
Safe Driving Tips
Authorities offered these tips to those venturing out today:
- Reduce your speed and increase following distance
- Avoid sudden braking or sharp turns
- Keep headlights on and stay alert for slick spots
- If you start to skid, steer gently in the direction you want to go.
Cold Weather Continues
Temperatures will drop into the teens tonight and South Jersey will see highs in the mid to upper 30s through the upcoming weekend.
