A new study suggested that artificial intelligence was used to create nearly 40% of the music released in July 2026. The research also raised the question of whether nearly a third of creators were lying when they said they hadn’t employed AI in their songs.

The figures emerged a month after the SubmitHub platform launched its AI detection tool, SH Labs, after identifying a “growing disclosure problem” that leaves listeners unaware of how the material they’re hearing was created.

The SH Labs tool – used by Bandcamp, Traxsource and others – analyzed more than a million songs released last month. Of those, 23.2% were found to be entirely AI-generated, with an additional 15.3% containing AI elements which had been “modified” by humans.

The recent study also found that 31% of AI-generated songs were tagged by their submitters as not artificially generated.

SubmitHub boss Jason Grishkoff said in a statement: “I think the path forward for AI music is disclosure. People should be able to decide for themselves whether they want to engage with AI-generated music. Our job is to give them enough information to make that choice.”

Almost All Music Producers Use AI, Report Says

Last month, several leading industry organizations announced plans to develop an AI badging system to help listeners understand how songs were created, although the system will be voluntary.
