SALEM — PETA has asked the Salem County Sheriff's Office to end its K-9 program following the deaths of two members.

Rip and Boomer died on May 29 in their handler's vehicle, where they were left with the windows rolled up and a faulty air conditioner. Following an investigation by the Salem County Prosecutor's Office, Sgt. Cody Henderson faces animal cruelty charges.

In a letter from Allison Fandl, PETA's manager of special projects in their cruelty investigations department, the group asked Sheriff Charles Miller to consider ending its K-9 program as the current roster retires. Their main reason is not the hours but the lack of technology to guarantee that a dog will not be left unattended in a vehicle.

"Will you please plan now to use state-of-the-art technology, such as tactical robots, drones, or portable mass spectrometers, which enhance safety and operational efficiency without risking anyone’s life, once your current K-9s have been retired?" Fandl asked.

K-9 program will continue

Miller said that he is well aware of the "various technologies and resources" available to law enforcement, some of which are already in use, like a department drone unit. But K-9s are also a valuable resource that helps protect officers and the public, and doesn't foresee making any changes. He said the deaths of Rip and Boomer were an "isolated incident."

"Based on the information already currently available, I do not see any reason that would warrant discontinuing a K-9 program that has successfully served the residents of Salem County for the past 22 years," Miller said.

The sheriff said that Henderson has been suspended without pay.
