About 30 years ago, a local, Atlantic City area tradition was born.

Believe it or not, it’s real. It’s called “Bag Day.”

The genesis of this idea is that “Bag Day” is its own special event for all of the locals who work at bars, restaurants and the Atlantic City casinos on St. Patrick’s Day.

”Bag Day” takes place on the day after St. Patrick’s Day each year, to give those the same opportunity to have their own day to party and celebrate.

If you’re wondering how did “Bag Day” actually begin … the folklore goes like this.

About 30 years ago, a woman came to Atlantic City’s  The Irish Pub in Atlantic City looking for her own party  on the day after St. Patrick’s Day.

This unknown woman placed a bag over her head and declared that it’s “Bag Day.”

A tradition was born and it remains in effect today and it has grown significantly over the years.

Kelsey Grammer, who has long since become an incredible Atlantic City Ambassador, will open this year’s “Bag Day” events at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, March 18, 2023 at the Irish Pub in Atlantic City, New Jersey.

Remember, in order to be able to participate in “Bag Day” festivities, you must wear a bag on top of your head.

Some of the bags will be as simple as it gets … a brown paper bag with a message written with a Sharpie marker.

However, many of the bags will be elaborate art creations.

Today is “Bag Day” in the Atlantic City, New Jersey area and it really does exist.
