Kingery Returns to Phillies, Starts in Center; Williams Optioned

The Phillies got a boost to their offense on Sunday as one of their offensive players returned to health.  The Phillies activated utility player Scott Kingery from the injured list.  But to make room, the Phillies sent outfielder Nick Williams to Triple-A Lehigh Valley.

Kingery immediately was placed into the Phillies starting lineup, batting seventh and playing center field.  The Phillies are looking for an offensive boost from the center field position, where Odubel Herrera is batting just .186 in the month of May. The right-handed bat will counter Rockies starter Kyle Freeland.

Somewhat of a surprise is Williams heading to Triple-A.  Williams was the only left-handed bat on the Phillies bench.  The Phillies would have otherwise had to choose between infield and outfield subs Sean Rodriguez and Phil Gosselin, both right-handed hitters.

However, Williams is batting just .180 on the season.  Presumably the Phillies will start Williams every day at Triple-A, hoping to get his bat going.  Williams had a couple timely hits for the Phillies, but with an OPS of .493, the Phillies must have felt they stood a better shot with Rodriguez and Gosselin serving as pinch-hitters for now.
