Former NJ Senator Will Be The Last ‘Boss’ Of Atlantic County
This former Atlantic County, New Jersey Senator is one of the most power in New Jersey history. And, he will undoubtedly be the last “Boss” of Atlantic County.
John Froonjian has written the definitive book about former Senator Bill Gormley … titled “A Son Of The City,” meaning Atlantic City.
Gormley possessed An Uncommon Amount Of Political Power
Gormley was the chairman of the New Jersey state Senate judiciary committee. He wielded an incredible amount of power, with control of just about every political appointment in Trenton.
Gormley, The Consummate Deal Maker
During Gormley’s time in the New Jersey Legislature, (1977-1982 New Jersey General Assembly and (1982-2007), New Jersey State Senate … Gormley demonstrated the ability to work effectively with both sides of the political aisle to get things done.
The current Atlantic County Senator, Vince Polistina also has demonstrated an ability to work with both sides of the aisle effectively.
Polistina has been getting a lot of good things done for Atlantic County.
John Froonjian (Gormley) Book — ‘A Son Of The City’
It is such a well written book. Froonjian partnered with Stockton University and The Press of Atlantic City to accomplish his project.
Stockton University has made access to a digital copy of the book free of charge.
The Gormley book has also been formally published and it looks great in print.
W.F. “Buzz” Keough, Executive Editor of The Press of Atlantic City, printed the entire book in a weekly series of each chapter of the book.
It will go down to some of the most generous coverage ever provided for such an extended period of time.
No New Jersey Senator Has Ever Been This Well Documented Before The Froonjian Project About Gormley
The book is filled with history and great stories about the life and times of Bill Gormley.
There Would Be No Atlantic City Convention Center Without Gormley
The Atlantic City Convention Center Shoujd be named after Gormley. It’s never too late to do the right thing
Gormley delivered the $ 268 million funding in a collaboration with former New Jersey Governor Christine Todd Whitman.
The Atlantic City Convention Center opened on May 1, 1997. It was the largest and most expensive public project ever built in Atlantic City at the time.
No property tax dollars were spent on either The Atlantic City Convention Center, or, the Atlantic City Boardwalk Hall restoration.
Gormley Also Obtained The Funding For Atlantic City Boardwalk Hall Restoration
The Atlantic City Boardwalk Hall was in very bad shape.
Gormley obtained $ 90 million for a three-year restoration of Historic Boardwalk Hall.
This restoration project saved Boardwalk Hall and transformed it into a special events arena … well, also preserving the historical nature of Historic Atlantic City Boardwalk Hall.
Atlantic City Boardwalk Hall Was Built In 1929
They were able to use the Thomas Edison, fortified concrete, which enabled this Grand facility to have no large pillars.
No structure of this size had ever been built without the large support columns, which affected viewing in the various special events arena.
It was a truly groundbreaking achievement and a first in American history.
Since The Gormley Restoration
Atlantic City’s Boardwalk Hall has been the # 1 arena of its size in America multiple times over the years.
There Would Be No Stockton University Atlantic City Campus Without Gormley
Stockton Atlantic City Campus is spectacular. This is another legendary feather in The Gormley Hat.
Gormley Delivered Michael Chertoff To Assist New Jersey
At no cost to the taxpayers of New Jersey, Gormley brought Chertoff into New Jersey to help tackle domestic violence issues.
Gormley built meaningful relationships and partnerships throughout New Jersey and Washington, D.C.
Cherroff was the second United States Secretary of Homeland Security and served under President George W Bush from 2005 to 2009.
Former New Jersey Governor Tom Kean On Bill Gormley
Governor Kean is the most revered Governor in modern New Jersey history.
Governor Kean was so highly respected, that he was selected to co-chair (with Lee Hamilton) the 911 commission, following the worst terrorist attack in American history.
This may be one of the last non-partisan acts that has taken place in America for the past 25 years.
For the book, Kean wrote A very gracious and extensive comment about Gormley as follows;
Today's political polarization can be depressing. Intense partisanship. Political performance art instead of policy. Gridlock instead of governance. It would be great to find a politician whose priority was getting results. A bipartisan politician who cared about outcomes, not self-promoting publicity or tribalism. A fighter unafraid to take on powerful special interests or to address the most complex issues. And who brought to mind a word rarely associated with politics: fun. New Jersey's 2nd Legislative District in Atlantic County had such a leader: former State Senator William L. Gormley. Gormley's work changed the face of Atlantic City with housing, a convention center, a rail terminal, an events hall, a new road, hotels, shopping - all helping the regional economy. His statewide efforts on shore protection, property tax relief and justice benefited all New Jersey residents. This book tells his story. It is not an adversarial critique; it's more of an appreciation of his career. That might disappoint his critics, about whom Gormley himself might say, "Obviously, not everybody loves me." But any neutral assessment must conclude that Gormley was extraordinarily successful as a legislator, as a leader and as a protector of Atlantic City, Atlantic County and its people, wrote Governor Kean.
