Update: Big National Chain to Close 18 Stores in the Philadelphia Area
More details are becoming available as to which stores one national retailer will be closing in our region, including 18 locations in and around Philadelphia alone.
On Monday, news broke that Philadelphia-based Rite Aid was filing for bankruptcy protection and, as a result, could potentially close countless underperforming stores.
On Tuesday, a list of stores that will be shutting down began to circulate. Today, that list got a lot clearer -- and larger.
Mounting problems
For years, Rite Aid, which is estimated to be about $8.6 billion in debt, has been dealing with slowing sales, increasing competition, and, more importantly, hundreds of lawsuits involving the nation's opioid epidemic.
Simply put, Target, Walmart, Amazon, and even CVS often offer lower prices and a more convenient shopping experience, not to mention, having a prescription filled is not too difficult these days.
Meanwhile, those competitors have also been able to expand their healthcare offerings, such as CVS with its Minute Clinics and Walgreens' plans to open doctor's offices inside many of their stores soon.
As a result, countless Rite Aid stores around the country will be closing within the next few weeks.
