New Jersey Prosecutors Receive Funding For Mental Health Initiatives
In 2024, New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy signed the Seabrooks-Washington Community-Led Crisis Response Act, which established a Community Crisis Response Advisory Council and created a community crisis response pilot program with grants to help communities better handle Mental Health crises.
The safety of law enforcement, mental health professionals, and innocent civilians is a priority during incidents involving people under duress whose situations are spilling out into public. New procedures have been implemented, and a new mental health court has been established in different NJ Counties to handle the aftermath of these incidents.
Now, two South Jersey Counties have agreed to split grant money to support the County Prosecutor's Office's work with Mental Health Programs.
Atlantic and Cape May Counties Worked Together To Submit Grant Application
A press release was sent to select media outlets stating that the New Jersey Office of the Attorney General’s Office of Alternative and Community Responses has awarded a $1.3 million grant for Mental Health Programs.
The Cape May County Prosecutor's Office and the Atlantic County Prosecutor's Office have agreed to split the $1.3 million grant for their Mental Health Diversion (MHD) programs.
These programs identify people who are dealing with mental illness who are facing criminal charges. The individuals who qualify for this program are offered supervised treatment in exchange for diversion that is contingent with strict conditions for charges to be downgraded or dismissed.
If an individual fails to take advantage of this Mental Health Program or if they become repeat offenders after going through the MHD program, that person will face additional prosecution and likely imprisonment.
You can visit the Atlantic County Prosecutor's Office website for more information about their Mental Health Diversion program.
