A Salem County man is likely facing several years in prison on gun charges following an alleged 100 MPH drunk drive on the Atlantic City Expressway.

On Tuesday, 36-year-old Akeem Statin of Penns Grove pleaded guilty to second-degree unlawful possession of a handgun and second-degree certain persons not to possess a firearm.

The Atlantic County Prosecutor's Office said on October 27th, 2023, New Jersey state troopers received reports of an erratic driver on the Atlantic City Expressway who was going over 100 MPH and swerving into traffic.

Troopers pulled the driver, Statin, over, and they noticed signs of intoxication. He also admitted to consuming "a couple of drinks and a couple of shots" before driving, per officials.

Troopers arrested Statin for driving under the influence, and they searched Statin's vehicle for the source of intoxication. Troopers discovered a loaded handgun in the center console. Statin has a prior conviction that prohibits him from possessing any firearms.

Sentencing is scheduled for July 31st. Under the terms of a plea agreement, he faces eight years in state prison, subject to five years of parole ineligibility.
