SOUTH BRUNSWICK — Police have stopped suspected drunk drivers before. But a DWI while driving heavy construction machinery on a busy road might be first in this Middlesex County township.

Police say William Campbell, 56, was literally drinking and driving while behind the wheel of a backhoe Tuesday afternoon on New Road near Route 1.

And it wasn't Campbell's first DWI. Police say he already has seven DWI convictions on his record since 1980.

After being alerted to the scene by some callers, police say they saw the backhoe weaving in and out of the lane. Campbell "appeared slouched over the wheel of the backhoe," police said Wednesday.

Police released police dashcam video of the incident, which is posted above.

Not only was Campbell drinking beer while driving, but police say he also brought bottles of vodka and Jack Daniels along for the ride.

Campbell admitted he did not have a valid driver’s license and failed a sobriety test.

He was charged with DWI, careless driving, failing to maintain a lane, having an open alcohol container, and fourth-degree driving while suspended as a result of a DWI conviction.

"The actions of the caller and officer took this impaired driver off the road before anyone was harmed," Chief Raymond Hayducka said Wednesday.

Campbell was released from custody and has a court appearance scheduled for January. He could not be reached for comment Wednesday.
