2 NJ Grocery Stores Closing Amid Fierce Competition

Two New Jersey grocery stores are closing, costing more than 100 jobs and ending a 50-year run for one longtime supermarket.

Rising operating costs, online grocery shopping, and intense regional competition continue to pressure supermarkets across the state.

Despite New Jersey's population of 9.5 million, the grocery business remains intensely competitive. ShopRite, Acme, Lidl, Aldi, Walmart, Target, Stop & Shop, Trader Joe's, Whole Foods, Wegmans -- they're all battling for the same shoppers.

Acme Store in Bergen County Closing

According to NJ.com, the Acme store in the Edgewater Commons Shopping Center in Edgewater, Bergen County, lost its lease and will be gone by the middle of August.

When that store closes, 115 employees could lose their jobs or be transferred to other locations.

Red Bank Supermarket Ends 50-year Run

Farther south in Monmouth County, patch.com says the Super Foodtown store on Broad Street in Red Bank has closed after half a century.

The owners of that store, citing "fierce competition," told that publication,

It is with great sadness and heavy hearts that the Azzolina and Scaduto Families announce the closure of our Red Bank Super Foodtown on or about close of business May 23, 2026.

A local fitness club and spa will reportedly be moving into that space in the near future.

Grocery Outlet Stores Closed

Those closures come just weeks after six Grocery Outlet locations across New Jersey closed.

Those stores were in Delran, Hazlet, Gibbstown, Mays Landing, Sicklerville, and Rio Grande.
