The maker of a K-cup coffee makers has agreed to pay $5.8 million to settle federal charges that the company failed to properly report a defective product that seriously injures dozens of customers.

In addition to the fine, the Vermont-based Keurig Green Mountain has to develop new policies to ensure compliance with the Consumer Product Safety Act, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission said Tuesday.

About 6.6 million of the potentially defective machines were recalled in 2014, four years after the company started receiving complaints about the Keurig MINI Plus Brewing Systems, which sprayed hot water and coffee onto people, causing second and third-degree burns.

The $100 machines were sold at major retailers and online from December 2009 to December 2014.

The company did not admit to any wrongdoing.

The serial number on the recalled machines began with the number 31.

More information about what to do with a recalled machine is available at Keurig's website.
