Washington Township Police Vehicles Hit on Route 42 During Arrest
Washington Twp., N.J. — Two marked Washington Township police vehicles were struck early Wednesday morning on Route 42, including one with an officer still sitting inside, while officers were making an arrest during a motor vehicle stop.
The crash happened just before 1:45 AM on the northbound side of the freeway between Exits 7 and 7B, near the merge with the Atlantic City Expressway.
According to the Washington Township Police Department, Sgt. Nichols, Ofc. McNair, and Det. Russo had pulled a vehicle over and determined one of the occupants had outstanding warrants. As officers worked to complete the arrest, Sgt. Nichols returned to his patrol car to finish paperwork.
That's when a 2010 Mercury Milan approached from behind and struck McNair's unoccupied patrol vehicle first, then continued forward and hit Nichols' car while he was inside.
Neither officer was hurt. Both patrol cars, however, sustained significant damage.
The driver, a 63-year-old Deptford man, suffered minor injuries.
Because the crash happened outside of Washington Township's jurisdiction, New Jersey State Police responded and are handling the investigation, which remains ongoing.
