A Mullica Township man was attacked by a rabid raccoon as he was trying to remove the animal from his property on Thursday.

The Press of Atlantic City reports that the raccoon did test positive for the rabies virus.

The unidentified man was treated at the hospital after being bitten in his yard located in the vicinity of Elwood Weekstown Road in Mullica Township.

If you find a stay animal on your property you should call Animal Control to have the animal remove immediately. If you've been bitten, seek medical treatment after washing the wound with soap and water as soon as you can according to the report.

All bites should also be reported to the Atlantic County Division of Public Health at 609-645-5971.
