Maple Shade, N.J. — A retired law enforcement officer from South Jersey is facing charges after authorities say he sexually assaulted a teenage girl and provided her with gifts, including an electric scooter, a cell phone, and access to his credit card.

67-year-old Louis J. Baselice of Maple Shade, a retired law enforcement officer who served with the Haddonfield Police Department, has been charged with second-degree sexual assault and third-degree endangering the welfare of a child.

How the Investigation Began

Investigators determined that Baselice had purchased an electric scooter and cell phone for the girl and provided her with his credit card number so she could order food.

Additional details are being withheld to protect the victim's identity.

Retired Officer Arrested and Jailed

Baselice was taken into custody Tuesday at the Maple Shade Police Department and lodged at the Burlington County Jail in Mount Holly pending a detention hearing. The case will be prepared for presentation to a grand jury for possible indictment.
