Today at 3:00 p.m. was supposed to be the much anticipated School Choice “Lottery” Day at Ocean City High School.

This is the day when parents and students find out if they are fortunate enough to be able to attend Ocean City High School (next year) … as students that are permitted to come from outside of the Ocean City Public Schools district.

There are only so many available openings. Winning a slot in this annual ritual is coveted.

Despite what you are about to read (about this one incident) Ocean City High School and the Ocean City Public Schools are outstanding public institutions of learning.

Regretfully, a threat was made today and we will share with you now what we’ve learned.

Out of an abundance of caution, the Ocean City Public Schools has evacuated the high school building of students and faculty and brought the Ocean City Police Department in to investigate a threat which has been made on social media.

The Ocean City Public Schools has released this public statement for now:

There has been a threat on social media to the safety of students and staff at OCHS. We have initiated our evacuation procedures. Ocean City police have been called into the high school. All students are safe, but we are taking the threats serious. The district will continue to work with Ocean City Police and communicate with parents once we have more information.

Regarding today’s previously scheduled School Choice  student “Lottery” … we have confirmed that the following text message was just sent out. It reads as follows:

OCSD: IMPORTANT! The School Choice Lottery has been canceled for today. Please check your email for an important message from the OCSD. Thank you.

The email has not yet been received as we file this report. But, we can confirm that the school choice lottery will take place tomorrow virtually.

This is a developing story and it will be updated as we obtain more information.
