71-year-old Woman Killed in Ocean County Fire; Smoking Blamed
It appears that careless smoking is to blame for a house fire in Ocean County on Thursday afternoon that killed a 71-year-old woman.
The Ocean County Prosecutor's Office says the blaze started around 3 PM on Route 9 in Waretown.
Victim Found Inside First-floor Bedroom
During a primary search of the structure, first responders discovered a deceased 71-year-old woman in a first-floor bedroom.
An extensive investigation by multiple agencies revealed that the fire originated on the floor of that bedroom and was accidental, caused by smoking.
The identity of the victim was not released.
Ocean County Prosecutor Bradley Billhimer thanked officials in his office, the Ocean County Sheriff's Office Crime Scene Investigation Unit, the Ocean Township Police Department Detective Bureau, the Ocean County Fire Marshal's Office, and the New Jersey State Fire Marshal's Office for their cooperative efforts in this incident.
