Wildwood Traffic Lights are Flashing, So You Know Summer is Really Over Now
Wildwood, N.J. — If you needed one more sign that summer is officially over down the shore, this is it.
Every year on October 1st, the traffic signals throughout the Wildwoods switch from normal operation to flashing. Instead of red, yellow, and green lights directing traffic at intersections, many signals on the island, thanks to a lack of vehicles, will be just blinking for the next six or seven months.
But for many, this time-honored tradition is a signal, no pun intended, that not only is summer over, but local summer is quickly fading away, too.
It's sort of like reverse Groundhog Day. Instead of a rodent predicting how much winter we have left, a bunch of traffic lights are telling us how much summer we have left.
None.
Your days at the beach have disappeared as quickly as those 8:30 PM sunsets. What we wouldn't give for one more 93-degree beach day...

The rides and arcade games on the boardwalk are quiet. The long lines at your favorite pizza place have vanished.

Oh, and all of the shoobies are gone (and they took their stupid DelCo flags with them).

And now things are so quiet that we don't even need traffic lights.
October is here. And for us, that's a good thing.
While there are a bunch of events still to check out, things are a bit more relaxed now. We can enjoy the slower pace of life. And you can get a picture of the big WILDWOOD sign without having 23 strangers in it.
There's something pretty great about having the beach, the boardwalk, and streets of the Wildwoods almost to yourself.
Just remember to look both ways. The traffic lights aren't doing much these days.
