Atlantic City Police Chief Henry White has announced that he will be retiring on October 1st after 35 years of service.

The ACPD released a statement Saturday morning, which reads in full,

Chief White, who was born and raised in Atlantic City and is a graduate of the Atlantic City public school system, began his law enforcement career in 1985 after graduating from William Paterson University.

Chief White’s first assignments were in the patrol division and Safe Streets Unit (foot patrol). In 1988, he was assigned as a detective in the Special Investigations Section and Major Crimes Unit. During this period, he was also a member of the department’s Crisis Negotiating Team and was the Critical Incident Stress Management officer for the department.

In 1997, Chief White was promoted to sergeant and assigned to various investigative units. After being promoted to Captain in 2001, he held assignments as a patrol division commander, Crisis Negotiating Team commander, and was the accreditation manager for the department.

In 2005, Chief White was promoted to deputy chief before being promoted to Chief of Police in 2013. During his tenure as Chief of Police, the police department has increased their community policing efforts to interact with the residents in a more positive setting. This has included the creation of the Neighborhood Coordination Unit targeting quality of life issues in the communities and addressing and assisting our homeless population and community outreach. As a result of these efforts, the complaints that are received about police officers has drastically reduced.

Chief White has also been at the forefront of technological advances in policing in Atlantic City such as mandating that all patrol officers wear a body worn camera and the opening of a state-of-the-art surveillance center.

Besides his role in the police department, Chief White has continued to give back to the community by volunteering his time to be on several boards that aid the community such as the Planning Board for the City of Atlantic City, Atlantic City Police Athletic League (PAL), and the Atlantic City Police Foundation.

Chief White will retire to enjoy time with his wife Briggitte, three sons, Henry, John, and David, daughters’ in-law Latiya and Cori, and five granddaughters.
