Patti Scialfa, Bruce Springsteen's wife and a member of the E-Street Band, has revealed she was diagnosed in 2018 with multiple myeloma, a form of blood cancer, according to Variety.

Scialfa has been conspicuously absent from much of the E Street Band's latest tour and this diagnosis explains why.

Patti Scialfa Reveals Cancer Diagnosis in New Documentary

Scialfa publicly addressed her cancer diagnosis for the first time in the new documentary "Road Diary: Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band," which premiered Sunday at the Toronto Film Festival.

The movie chronicles the behind-the-scenes preparation for Springsteen's band 2023-2024 World Tour.

In the documentary, Scialfa says that her illness has made it difficult for her to perform. As a result, she’s taken a step back from touring.

This affects my immune system, so I have to be careful what I choose to do and where I choose to go. Every once in a while, I come to a show or two and I can sing a few songs on stage, and that’s been a treat. That’s the new normal for me right now, and I’m OK with that.

What is Multiple Myeloma?

Multiple myeloma is an uncommon blood cancer that affects the bone marrow, the body's blood-forming system, and can lead to kidney problems.

According to the Cleveland Clinic, researchers are still searching for a cure.

"Like many other types of cancer, multiple myeloma has no cure. However, people with multiple myeloma can live for multiple years with treatment, and treatments are continuing to improve. Some people with multiple myeloma may experience remissions that last for years."

Patti Scialfa's Career in the E Street Band

Patti Scialfa, 71, joined the E Street Band in 1984, coming on board as a backup vocalist only a few days before the start of the Born in the USA tour.

She and Springsteen started living together in the late 1980s before they married in 1991.

Scialfa was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of the E Street Band in 2014.

In “Road Diary,” she says that performing on stage with her husband offers the audience “a side of our relationship that you usually don’t get to see.”

Bruce Springsteen has had his own health issues over the past couple of years, being forced to postpone his tour last year when he developed a peptic ulcer disease.

Earlier this year, he rescheduled some shows with vocal issues.
