The home of a local veteran, who served in the Air Force during the Korean War, got some serious sprucing up this holiday season.

The Burlington County chapter of Habitat for Humanity just put a new roof on McDonald Martin's Palrmyra house.

But, that's not all. Martin, who was a baker and communications specialist during his time in the Air Force, tells 6abc.com that he hadn't decorated his home for the holidays in more than four decades. That's where Habit for Humanity volunteers also stepped in, bringing some cheer to Martin's home exterior and even baking him Christmas cookies.

Wreaths were hung, lights were strung, and Christmas cheer took over. Martin says it's the kind of present he's always dreamed of. He tells 6abc"This is the thing about America: we like to give and we like to help people. America always reaches out."

Lori Leonard, CEO of Habitat for Humanity of Burlington and Mercer, who personally baked the cookies Martin received, says of the veteran, "He has the memory, a way better memory than mine and telling me stories, bible verses. He's such a great guy. We're actually really privileged to be able to help him."

And, in just a few more weeks, HFH will also be able to give Martin a new heating unit.
