Atlantic City Police say Volunteers of America outreach staff members interrupted an attempted sexual assault and held the suspect for police Monday morning.

According to a press release,

At 8:32 am, patrol officers responded to the unit north block of Arkansas Avenue for a report of a sexual assault. Two outreach staff members were meeting the victim, a 61-year-old woman, to offer social services to her. They observed Joseph Lewis physically assaulting the victim and attempting to sexually assault her. Lewis attempted to run away, but was tackled by one of the staff members as the other assisted the victim.

The victim was transported to AtlantCare Regional Medical Center-City for treatment of her injuries.

51-year-old Joseph Lewis of Atlantic City was charged with attempted sexual assault, aggravated assault, and contempt of court. He was remanded to the Atlantic County Justice Facility.
