Man Killed During Encounter With NJSP Detectives
The New Jersey Attorney General's Office is investigating a police-involved shooting that occurred Tuesday afternoon in Camden County.
The incident left an adult man, who is not being identified at this time, dead.
Details of the Encounter
According to the preliminary investigation, two New Jersey State Police detectives who are assigned to the United States Marshals Service NY/NJ Regional Fugitive Task Force were conducting an investigation involving the man when they encountered him on Haddon Avenue in the vicinity of Bate Avenue in West Berlin.
During the encounter, one of the NJSP detectives fired his service weapon, striking the man.
The man was taken to Cooper University Hospital in Camden where he was pronounced dead at 2:13 PM.
Law enforcement recovered a revolver at the scene after the shooting, per the NJAG's office.
The investigation is ongoing and no further information is being released.
Legal Process and Oversight
A law passed in 2019 requires the Attorney General's Office to conduct investigations of a person's death that occurs during an encounter with a law enforcement officer. Those details are then presented to a grand jury to determine if the evidence supports the return of an indictment against the officer or officers involved.
