VOORHEES — Since training camp started a little later than normal this year, Flyers brass had plenty of time to guess at a depth chart, moving the magnets with players’ names on them around a dry-erase board and fathoming how line combinations might work.

Even though so much could change so early in training camp, what the Flyers have put together was done so thoughtfully and will stick around at least a day or two.

That may carry over into Monday when the Flyers have split-squad games in Newark against the New Jersey Devils and in Brooklyn against the New York Islanders.

If that’s the case, it’s fine by at least one trio.

“I’m pretty good with our line right now,” said Scott Laughton, on a line with Nick Cousins and newcomer Dale Weise. “It was connecting pretty well and we’ll see what happens here.”

The Flyers drafted Laughton to be a center and now see him as a left wing. Even though they’re thin at center with Claude Giroux, Sean Couturier and Pierre-Edouard Bellemare not yet returned from the World Cup, they find Laughton better suited along the boards.

“He’s versatile, but he did a good job for us last year as a left winger as we went down the stretch,” coach Dave Hakstol said. “At this point in time, yes, I think that’s where he’s played his best hockey for us.”

Laughton, 22, and Cousins, 23, played together last year, but that was before the Flyers made a couple offseason acquisitions. Early speculation was that there may not be enough room on the roster for both of them, but perhaps they’ll both make it on the same unit.
