Here are 3 Roster Battles to Watch at Flyers Camp
VOORHEES — Even though most of the players have been around for the last couple weeks, training camp officially begins for the Flyers on Friday.
The ice will be more crowded than usual. Veterans who were on the team last year will be joined by rookies and minor-league offseason signings who haven’t been around much like Andy Miele, Will O’Neill and Greg Carey.
And the little space on the ice might be an eye opener for some of the veterans because the team’s front office believes there’s going to be a lot of competition in camp, whether it be for jobs on the NHL roster, roles on the team or ice time in games.
“We’ve got some decisions to make,” general manager Ron Hextall said recently. “One thing we have with the World Cup is opportunity. Typically, your veteran players, you want to get them in four, five games, and it limits the opportunity for some other guys. Well this year is a little different year.”
The team will have more time to look at some young players, with five players still active in the tournament. Czech Republic natives Jake Voracek and Michal Neuvirth are eliminated, but will be given a rest and likely won’t join the team until Sunday or Monday.
So what’s up for grabs? Here’s a look at some of the battles to watch for.
