This is a very promising update.

For the first time in years, I am convinced that the United States Department of Housing & Urban Development is genuinely focused on providing much needed help to the residents of Stanley Holmes Village in Atlantic City, New Jersey.

These fine residents have been living with no heat, no hot water and amongst rodents and insects for years.

The money has always been in place for the Atlantic City Housing Authority to remedy the many quality of life issues that have plagued these residents.

This local Atlantic City agency has simply failed to do its job. They are the problem. Not HUD.

I had a very positive conversation today with Shantae Goodloe from the United States Department of Housing & Urban Development. She and HUD are demonstrating a true sense of urgency to ensure that these affected residents will finally get the help that they desperately need.

Last week, representatives from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) met with the Atlantic City Housing Authority (ACHA) and other stakeholders to continue its review of the conditions of the Stanley Homes Village public housing. HUD understands the substandard living conditions residents are facing and has been actively monitoring the situation. Through these important discussions with ACHA, HUD aims to address and remediate health and safety threats while ensuring that ACHA meets HUD requirements to better serve the residents of Stanley Homes Village, said HUD.

"The safety of our residents, living in hazard-free environments is our top priority," said Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary for Public and Indian Housing, Richard J. Monocchio. "HUD is not only working with the housing authority to protect families in this community, to guarantee quality living conditions but also to mitigate future risks of health and safety concerns through our unwavering commitment to accountability for our residents."

HUD is making a top priority is to ensure the health and safety of residents and have pledged to provide better communication and support.

HUD has confirmed that the Atlantic City Housing Authority has identified households in need of immediate assistance and these residents will be provided assistance prior to the fall and winter months arriving.

That’s been the unacceptable problem over the past couple of years. These residents have been left with no heat, no hot water and some without cooking capability in their homes.

In the coming months, HUD will continue with on-the-ground visits in Atlantic City like last week’s and provide the hands-on support to ensure the Atlantic City Housing Authority is actively meeting their goals to better serve this community.
