TRENTON — Two people were killed and eight others wounded after shots were fired by several people into a block party with about 100 people in attendance.

Trenton police found 10 people, including two women and six men who ranged in age between 23 and 43, with gunshot wounds on Locust Street in the Wilbur section of Trenton. Many of the victims were taken by ambulance or private vehicle  to Capital Health Regional Medical Center, according to Mercer County Prosecutor  Janetta Marbrey.

Tyasiah West, 33, and 42-year-old Anthony Howlett died from gunshot wounds at the hospital.

The suspects fired over 50 shots along the entire block of Locust Street that also hit several vehicles, Marbrey said.

Nearly 40 evidence markers at Trenton shooting scene

There were approximately 40 evidence markers placed on the ground, according to NBC Philadelphia. A car with "visible damage" was towed away from a hospital entrance.  Marbrey did not say what led to the shooting or disclosed the identities of the the victims. No arrests have been made.

Trenton Mayor Reed Gusciora described the shooting as a "devastating act of gun violence" in the Wilbur section of East Trenton.

"My heart goes out to the families of the two people whose lives were taken, to everyone who was wounded, and to the residents of the Wilbur Section who awoke this morning to another painful reminder of the consequences of gun violence," Gusciora said.

Gusciora said that the lives affected by the shooting are more than what can be included in a police report. He singled out Howlett who was fatally shot as having recently turned his life around after spending time in jail.

"His story is an important reminder of why we do this work: people can change, people deserve the opportunity to rebuild their lives, and it is especially heartbreaking when a life moving in a different direction is cut short by violence," Gusciora said.

Howlett was a member of the Gangster Killer Bloods and was indicted in 2010 about a series of shootings in 2005. He pleaded guilty to second-degree racketeering

The  mayor said 200 people were at the unauthorized party which he said presents a public safety concern for those at the party, the surrounding neighborhood and first responders who are called when something goes wrong. Steps will be taken to prevent future gatherings of this size.

"This is not about criminalizing people for gathering together. It is about recognizing the difference between a gathering and hundreds of people occupying a residential street without authorization, particularly when firearms and violence become part of that environment," Gusciora said.

Trenton has seen multiple fatal shootings in recent weeks

Maicol Metzler Chic, a 29-year-old man originally from Guatemala, was shot while walking along Whittaker Avenue on Sunday, according to Mercer County Prosecutor Janetta Marbrey.

Justin Fajardo-Meza, 19, of Lawrence was shot in the head in the area of New Rose Street and Martin Luther King Boulevard on Aug. 19, according to Peterson's Breaking News of Trenton and an obituary.
