Legendary Offshore Restaurant Pulled Right From Atlantic City, NJ

This former legendary Atlantic City, New Jersey area restaurant was so iconic … that they were able to successfully turn their name into an action verb.

Also, the featured photo (1976 from Kenneth McIntyre) above and directly below shows you how important Atlantic City was for their Mays Landing, Egg Harbor Township and North Wildwood marketing and business plans.

The particular billboard above, invited the folks visiting Atlantic City to get onto the Atlantic City Expressway to exit 12 and gave dinner at Zaberers.

The expansive boardwalk billboard inviting Atlantic City Boardwalk patrons to dine at Zaberers was 1976 massive advertising at its best.

The billboard was located very near another iconic boardwalk store, James Salt Water Taffy.

Zaberers was an incredibly popular and sprawling restaurant, which hit its peak level of success in the 1960’s to 1970’s.

When you arrived, you were welcomed to “Zaberville.”

Once inside, you could enjoy “Zaberized” cocktails.

The Zaberers name was everywhere.

Everyone from ordinary citizens from all over dined at Zaberers … and, so did some of the most famous people including:

United States Presidents Richard Nixon and Ronald Reagan, Philadelphia Mayor Frank Rizzo, Jimmy Durante and Liberace, to name just a few.

Zaberers opened on June 12, 1961. It was the former Gables Inn, which had been in business since 1929.

Charlie and Rita Zaberer renamed it Zaberers and they coined a great tagline, “Zaberers, Minutes Away.”

The phrase became so iconic, that it was engraved on the tombstone of one of The Zaberers.

Charlie Zaberers passed away in 1971 from pancreatic cancer.

Zaberers continued to operate until the early 1980’s, until the Atlantic City casino era began and eventually closed forever.

In a recent article that we wrote, (by a wide margin) more of our readers commented about Zaberers than any other former Atlantic City area restaurant that we featured.

There is no question about it. Zaberers is very fondly remembered by so many people in the Atlantic City and Mainland communities.
