Let’s Not Forget Atlantic City Police Officer; Killed 43 years Ago
October 14th came and went, without hardly a word about a forever young Atlantic City, New Jersey Police Officer … who forfeited his life in the line of duty on October 14, 1981.
There was a high-speed car chase and fierce gun battle that took the life of a young Atlantic City Police Officer named Peter Egnor.
Peter Francis Egnor was only 21 years old on this day, 43 years ago at the time of his brave, line of duty death.
An armed robbery suspect, Thomas Warren Kerr, of Chicago, Illinois was responsible for a high-speed car chase throughout the streets of Atlantic City.
Kerr shot and killed Egnor during the high-speed chase.
Kerr shot and hit three Atlantic City Police cars, killing Egnor.
The chase ended with Kerr crashing his car, Kerr was also killed in the gunfire exchange.
Egnor was an Atlantic City Police Officer for just 18 months at the time of his death.
My identical twin brother Don Hurley was in the same Atlantic County police training class as Egnor and knew him well. I asked Don to share his thoughts about Egnor:
Peter Egnor was a courageous young police officer, who died in a gun battle with a dangerous career criminal 42 years ago. His aggressive action saved the lives of his fellow police officers and countless civilians from the violent actions of this criminal. Pete was the best of those the Atlantic City Police Department has ever had to offer. As Jesus said at The Sermon On The Mount: 'Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called the children of God. May his soul continue to rest in peace, said Don Hurley.
Here is a photo of Egnor’s graduating police class. The photo was taken by the Atlantic City Police Department ID Unit.
